Your Machu Picchu adventure begins with a prompt pick up from your Sacred Valley Hotel or AirBnb between 5:00 AM and 5:15 AM. A private car will transport you through the scenic Andean mountains to the Ollantaytambo train station, a journey that takes approximately 30 minutes depending on your location.
Train Journey to Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Town
Once at Ollantaytambo, you will be assisted by the train staff for you to board your train to Aguas Calientes, departing at either 6:10 AM or 6:40 AM. This scenic 1.5-hour train ride offers breathtaking views of the Urubamba River and surrounding rugged terrain, setting the tone for an unforgettable day ahead.
Arrival and Welcome at Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Town
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Town, our friendly staff will be there to greet you, holding a sign with your name. After a brief introduction and helpful instructions, you may have some free time to relax, freshen up, before heading to the Aguas Calientes bus station. From there, you will take the Machu Picchu bus for a scenic 30-minute ride up to the Inca citadel. Depending on your Machu Picchu entry time, this gives you a chance to prepare for your guided tour of Machu Picchu and enjoy the incredible views on the way up.
Guided Tour of Machu Picchu Citadel
Your Machu Picchu ticket will provide access to the Machu Picchu tour circuit (usually Circuit 01 or 02, subject to availability). Our expert local guide will lead you on a 2.5-hour exploration of the Inca citadel, explaining the history, architecture, and significance of key monuments like the Temple of the Sun and Intihuatana Stone. This is your chance to learn about the fascinating Inca civilization while soaking in the breathtaking vistas.
Return to Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Town
After your guided tour, you’ll descend back to Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Town by bus. The journey takes approximately 25 minutes, giving you time to reflect on the day’s discoveries and relax before heading back.
Leisure Time in Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Town
Upon returning to Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Town, you’ll have some leisure time to explore the charming town, enjoy a meal, or purchase souvenirs before your return journey. Whether you relax at a local café or take a stroll through the market, the town offers a perfect respite before continuing your journey.
Return Train Journey to Ollantaytambo
Your return train will depart Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Town around 2:30 PM or 3:20 PM, taking you back to Ollantaytambo in 1.5 hours. Here, please follow the instructions of the Train Company Staff to continue your journey back to Cusco, ensuring a comfortable and safe ride.
Arrival in Cusco
Expect to arrive back in Cusco around 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM, where you will be dropped off at your hotel, concluding your memorable Machu Picchu day trip.

Ensure you bring the passport or ID used to purchase your Machu Picchu tickets. It’s required for entry to the site, and you’ll need to present it when checking in at the entrance. - Arrive Early at the Train Station
To ensure a smooth journey, arrive at the train station at least 30 minutes before departure. This will give you ample time to check in and prepare for the scenic ride to Aguas Calientes. - Limit Your Luggage
When traveling to Machu Picchu, keep in mind that only 5 kg (11 lbs) of luggage is allowed on the train to Machu Picchu. Travel light to make your journey more comfortable. - Pack Smart for the Day
